Why Travelling can be the Worst thing You Do

What’s all the hype with travelling?

It is quite ironic that I am writing this article. The person who has been passionate about travelling since I can remember. The person who has been travelling since she could do it. It is indeed odd and, apparently, very incoherent to be presenting this topic.

Travelling has been ingrained in us by advertisement selling experiences instead of things. It has been deeply implanted in our minds as the solution for the fast paced lives we live in. But is travelling really all about that?

Sure: when you travel, it’s incredible how everything is new and you’re so awake and so present in the moment. You go from place to place capturing everything as best as you can, especially with your camera, making sure you don’t miss any of the hit spots.

But what we seem to misunderstand is that experiences can happen anywhere. I can be more present and more alive here, without ever leaving my hometown than travelling the whole world just for the photo opportunity and for bookmarking all the places that other people said were worth so. For me the best place to be present may just be the landscape outside my door. In either case, being present — rather than travelling — is the key.
