Moving forward to the 6-hour Work Day
Why the Time is Now
The other day at lunchtime there was an argument about the number of hours we work and how tired or not we are. Yesterday a friend of mine was sharing how he was diagnosed with burnout. Another friend shared how she had absolutely nothing to do for most of her day and yet — even though this was digital work — she had to sit there, in front of the computer for 8 hours every day. The underlying belief that the longer you stay at the office, the better professional you are (regardless of whatever you might be doing during those hours or how productive you might be) is still alive!
In theory, one would think that human mentality would have accompanied tech evolution, that the better our phones and computers and machines were, the fewer hours we’d work, so we’d adapt to the new world. One would think that in a society that technologically has evolved so much there would also be a similar social evolution. However, it isn’t quite so. The status quo keeps us all held tight in a grip and our silent acceptance of it further contributes to keeping it as it is.
